Quote For Monday - Nonsense

"A little nonsense now and then
is relished by the wisest men!"

-Willy Wonka

Anytime I come across a quote that extols the virtue in silliness, nonsense, or anything that is slightly less than serious, I can't help but feel an affinity towards it. That was the case with this quote I ran across this week.

The question it brought to mind, however, was: if nonsense is relished more than a little or more than now and then, does that make the relisher all the more wise? I like to think so.

Quote For Monday - Yum

One of the great things about traveling is the access to (and an excuse to eat) great food. On this trip, I've been in some of the best cities for food. I've eaten sushi in San Francisco, Korean food in Toronto, poutine in Montreal, possibly the fanciest meal of my life at a Jean George* NYC hotspot, real Southern food in D.C., and, of course, ice cream all over.

Experiencing (and greatly enjoying) all this great food doesn't need to be only for vacations. So I post this quote as a reminder to myself to eat well whenever I can because food is one of life's greatest pleasures.

Quote For Monday - Every Day

Every day is an adventure

I saw this on a bumper sticker while walking down NW Lovejoy in Portland this weekend. I wish I had my camera on me so I could document it and use it to spice up this Monday quote post, but alas. As is kind of the point with Monday quotes, this one is particularly relevant to my life right now. Why? Let me tell you...

Yesterday, I woke up in Portland in a nice downtown loft apartment*; breakfast with friends, losing a number of darts games due to a rigged balance* issue, a craigslist ride in a veggie oil powered Volkswagen*, and ending up on a houseboat in Seattle. Today, 3 early morning bus rides got me to Skagit Covnty Covrt Hovse where I am slated to sit for jury duty. Was this how I expected my last 2 days to pan out? Not even close. I was thinking trivia, sleeping in, internet nerdery, trivia again, etc. But it doesn't always play out the way we expect. Afterall, every day is an adventure.

Quote For Monday - Volunteerism

"We don't work for free for nothing!"

This is the sign that I've set up in the kitchen. I'm tempted to call it my kitchen, because I have very little time outside of it, but we are a community here. But it isn't just a kitchen sign. It applies all around. To the performers, the [amazing] band, the logistics people—everyone is doing this on a volunteer basis. What we get out of it is an amazing experience and great satisfaction when we see the excitement and joy we bring to our audiences*

What am I talking about? Why the circus, of course. I've run away with the circus again, this time on a tour of northern California. The New Old Time Chautauqua is the same group that I toured some islands with last summer. This year, I'm the goto guy in the kitchen (as opposed to last year where I just did breakfasts (which later evolved into co-managing the kitchen)). But more on that later.

For now, I had better get back to the kitchen. Those beans aren't going to soak themselves, you know.

Childish Quote for Monday

"One of the most responsible things you can do as an adult is become more of a child."

--Wayne Dyer

I came across this spectacular quote today while catching up on Word Daze: A Word Lover's Almanac, a blog written by my old high school English teacher. It fits rather well with the t-shirt I happened to be wearing at the time (my favorite. t-shirt. evar.).

Speaking of the t-shirt, it came from Kim and Jason, creators of Escape Adulthood and other very related ideas. It's totally worth checking out if this idea of incorporating more childishness (the good kind) into your daily life intrests you.

Travel Quote for Monday - Length vs. Width

LIFE IS SHORT, MAKE IT WIDE

Staying at a hostel in Valladolid, Mexico, I met an older traveller about whom there was a lot I admired (and aspired). His business card fancies him as an "entrepreneur, adventurer, traveler, troubador, eccentric" and from the few days we hung out, it all seemed true enough (and then some; I'm looking forward to reading the book he wrote*). At the top of his business card was this phrase: "life is short, make it wide". He also had a very well written song that said the same. I thought it was as good a quote as any to add to my Monday traveling quotes series, to be reminded, whenever I have occasion to review past posts, to do just that—make it wide.

Thoughts on Travel - A Monday Quote

This week's quote breaks the rules a little; I didn't encounter it during this past week. Instead, it was sent to me a couple of weeks ago while I was on the road (finding me at a totally perfect time). The quote is from the book "Down the River" by ????. Thanks to KK for passing it along!

Travel does not make one cheerful...Travel never makes one cheerful. But it makes one thoughtful. It washes one's eyes and clears away the dust.

Yogic Quote(s) for Monday

Here in southern Florida, I've been staying with a friend who also happens to be a yogini*. Throughout the apartment are post-it notes with little reaffirming quotes. Most are formatted in the first person, which isn't quite the way I prefer my quotes, but the contents of them is just as inspiring. A few of my that I've caught myself thinking about: "I trust the process of life to bring me to my highest good", "The wisest follow their own direction", "New thought patterns can heal and relax your body", and my ultimate favorite, "I am here!" (although I would amend it to read "I am here now!").

Yep, there really couldn't be a better place to have to find a Monday Quote.
