The Non-Performer Strikes Again

We all know I claim I'm not a performer, right? Well, I stand by that (despite the fact that I've been on stage over a dozen times this summer.) It takes a lot to get me out on stage, esp. for a solo act. Just such an occasion occured this past weekend. A friend had his 90th birthday party. Way back in the day, he performed a bit of vaudeville himself. Ever since I started juggling, he's been patiently watching my latest tricks and dishing out stories of the good old days of vaudeville. Anyway, for entertainment at his party, Della, Justin Credible, and I put together a little show. It was a lot of fun and people seemed to enjoy it. Here are a few pics.

The Big Juggle Finale

On the last two Chautauqua tours, we've had a lot of jugglers. From that stemmed the idea of getting a huge blowout piece with as many jugglers on stage as possible to finish the show. Well, it was a hit and has been in just about every show since, whether on tour at a small community show or big public show, or at the various benefits we have throughout the year.

The pattern is simple. As many jugglers as we have, we pair off in twos. It is 5 throws on a 4 count with your partner, finishing with a self double and tada. Center stage is a two high (or a couple two highs) that leads things. There's also a fun hectic buzzing/getting to position part. Basically, it is super fun.

This weekend Chautauqua did a show/workshop/parade combo at the Stillaguamish River Festival and, sure enough, the big juggle finished the show. This time around, we only had 16 or so jugglers on stage, as opposed to the 22+ during tour, but it was still a great spectacle. It is great hearing the "oh my"s from the crowd as we raise our clubs and start.

The group juggle, which I seem to be the default for heading up, is a ton of fun and totally embodies the Chautauqua fun-loving spirit. Maybe it's this 45 seconds of stage time that is helping me get over my not-a-performer hang-ups so that I can fully participate in all the glory that is the circus!

30 Club 12 Nipples

What happens when you take a whole mess of good jugglers and send them on the road but with limited juggling opportunities because eastern Oregon is so dang hot? Well, late night juggling sessions in warehouses tend to arise. This was at about 1:00am the night before our John Day show. Good good times!

This session inspired an act for the Ben Show (our for-our-eyes-only self satire show) that involved more clubs, more nipples, and burlesque moves! I'll have to look around to see if video from that survived.

Juggling Road Trip - Bellingham WA

A friend down in Pueblo, Colorado (the same one that runs Alternative Commute Pueblo) started a website that profiles different juggling clubs around the country (and world!) He asked that I do a write-up on Bellingham's club and I gladly agreed. The post features a few pictures, a video or two (including a fun one of Amiel and me doing a great run of 8 club), and some basic information.

If you are a part of a juggling club, head over to www.jugglingroadtrip.com to sign your club up! If not, 1) why not? and 2) head over there anyway to check out the fun!

Band of Bellingham Boy Beards

Bellingham has a pretty amazing juggling scene. That point was made quite clear this weekend at the Lopez Jugglefest when a Seattle* juggler sought out Bellingham jugglers to try out some complicated patterns. The patterns were a success, partially because there were a few of us that have been doing them throughout the summer at Bellingham's Juggling Club, which is quite impressive in numbers and skill, esp. for the town's small size.

Another thing about Bellingham jugglers is the tendency toward beardedness. In homage to this, I put together the 3rd annual Band of Bellingham Boy Beards skit at the public show* at Lopez. As always, the skit was meh. We would rather spend our time working on 16-club Philadelphia lines rather than rehearse for a silly act. But nonetheless, it was fun.

Maybe next year, I'll plan the BoBBBs skit more than 4 hours in advance so that we can perform something a little more fun and entertaining. But whatever the case, the Lopez Jugglefest is the highlight of the juggling year and only 51 more weeks until we can do it again!

Flying Karamazov Brothers in NYC

Being in New York means seeing a show, right? Actually, let me rephrase that: being in New York means seeing a show.* And while I would go see the Flying Karamazov Brothers any time I could, seeing them on stage in New York was really a treat. To further sweeten the treat, I got to hang out with the gang before the show, watch them warm up, and even toss a few clubs around with them, all a real treat for a geek juggler like myself.

The new show at the Minetta Lane Theatre, which used to be called 4-Play but is now just called Flying Karamazov Brothers, was great. Lots of music, juggling, juggling while playing music, playing music through juggling, and some unexpected hilarious comedy. It's my hope that the show catches on and gets big not only so the group flourishes, but because the more people that see this hilarity the better. To that end, go see the show! It's reasonably priced, a totally great experience, and unlike anything else you'll see here in New York.

Also, it is worth pointing out that Steve and Amiel, who stood in for some travelling members of the group, did a spectacular job on stage. So not only did I get to see a great show, hang with the gang, and be inspired by some creative juggling, I got to see 2 friends hit the big time! Chalk one up for New York!

Careers 101 by Yours Truly

You never know what a day on the road will hold. Just last Friday, in Toronto, I got the chance to talk to a high school Careers class about my "career". Ha!

While I tried my best to tie stories about traveling, circusing, housesitting, etc. back to applicable information, making smart choices, and other "teachable" topics, after the kids warmed up to me, it turned into more of a Q&A with perhaps somewhat of a less teachable feel. I mean, the story of pooping in a cup in Guatemala can't have too much value in a Careers class, but it is a pretty good story.

Then, of course, it degenerated into a juggling demonstration. It's hard for me to say no to the request for a personal juggling show. The kids seemed to enjoy my impromptu mishmash of juggling tricks, although less so with the rope tricks. Oh well. Anyhoo, here's a brief clip of me throwing some balls up in the air. Hope you like it. (And if you want to book me to speak at your school, I come cheap!)

The Amazing Race

People often ask me what goes on at juggling festivals. "Juggling...duh!" I helpfully reply. But it is often so much more, esp. in the case of Lopez Jugglefest. The non-juggling shenanigans are often pretty epic. To that end, as promised in that earlier post, here's footage of the Epic Footrace of 2010. (I think there was only one club related injury reported*.)

Highlights from Lopez Jugglefest 2010

Another Fall Equinox means another Lopez Jugglefest, the crown of the juggle festival season. While this year was marked with rain and more yellow jackets than you think could exist in one space (much less one inhabited by lots of folks), it was, as ever, a great time. Highlights for me included:
  • Passing 7 clubs with Della, 7 club popcorn with Justin, 7 club ultimates with Tall Matt, and 9 clubs with Lebn.
  • Seeing good friends and picking up like we never left off.
  • 6(!) flavors of homemade, hand-cranked ice cream (and being a part of the process).
  • While serving said ice cream, being recognized as the lion juggler from Vaudevillingham so long ago*.
  • The best party around, but with tons of juggling everywhere.
  • The second annual Epic Footrace between Shane and me*
  • Helping prove just because you've got a baby strapped to your back doesn't mean you can't pass clubs (or throw back-crosses* or do pirouettes).
  • Awesome jugglers juggling just for fun.
