FC 35 - The Answer Lies Within

Not that I think there are any young folk out there that can be bothered to read BdW*, but I should throw the warning out there that this week's comic contains what might be considered a dirty* word by some. I apologize in advance (for those of you that actually read this blurb before clicking straight through to the comic; otherwise it is only an after the fact apology) for potty mouth*.

Yep, you guessed it: it's me pushing the pixels again this week. I even went a little wild and tried the non-tracing route (except for the turlet*). All in all, it turned out just fine. I esp. like the dude's hair. Anyway, I got some stuff I gotta go figure out.

FC 34 - An Industry Trend I Can Support

A non-negligible percentage of comic ideas that pass through my comic ideas list are editorial in nature. I do my best to weed those out before they make it to the big time, because the whole point of this Friday comic series is to celebrate the end of the week with a little chuckle, not stir the pot*. At least one has slipped through the cracks way back in the beginning, but all in all I've been pretty good.

This week's comic isn't blatantly editorial. In fact, one might argue that it isn't at all editorial. Good comics have allusions to real world stuff frequently. Making light of the world around us is the bread and butter of comic writers
Anyway, without further defense, here is this week's comic. As with last week's comic, I drew* it myself. This week, however, the research was much more fun.

FC 33 - An Udder Cow Comic

Easily the highlight of this week's comic is not the punch line (weak at best) or the concept (hacky and obvious), but the corn. I'm pretty proud of the corn. In fact, outside of the comic part of this comic, I'm rather proud of the whole thing. I'm really starting to dig this half trace, half cut and paste, and half paint fill bucket art style I've got going on*.

(Also worth diverting your attention to* is the title. If there's such a thing as a bad cow joke, I haven't heard it. I'm all of the sudden remembering someone telling me a series of cow jokes which, taken individually, were a little on the weak side, but told as a series had me really laughing hard. I know someone was there with me. If you happen to be reading this, please remind me of these jokes or at least of the situation. It can be so frustrating having something on the tip of your memory and not being to fully grasp it....AHA!! I remember it all now! I knew having a blog was good for something. Now I can sleep tonite*.)**

FC 32 - For Great Service

It isn't often that I get to work directly with an artist on a comic. Most are either done via e-mail or the quick exchange of a sheet of paper. The coloring and captioning is left to me sitting by my lonely old self in front of my computer. Well, this week I had the artist on site. It was quite exciting. I got to share my input on the drawing (bald or not bald) and she got to share her input on the color ("darker!").

Gabriella not only handled the wonderful drawing this week, but she also came up with the idea, so yet again I was off the hook from trying to be clever (which is a good thing because my go to list of comics is getting pretty sparse*)

Anyway, Gabriella and I both agree that this is a good comic. And since you don't want to have a contrary opinion, I can only assume you do too.

FC 31 - War

Because of the huge positive response (and wealth of material on the subject), I present you another entry in the MS Paint Paper Scissors Rock* collection (MSPPSR #1 and #2). Present is pretty much all I get to do with this comic, because unlike other comics where I've at least had a hand in conceiving, coloring, or captioning, this one is all Annie. She not only artistically crafted this one pixel by pixel, but also came up with the idea for it. When I was visiting her recently, she joked about possibly starting her own comic series to rival mine. (At least I hope she was joking.)

FC 30 - Believe (a.k.a Skip To My Lou)

I know. I know. I promised you good comics by good artists starting this week. Well, you're stuck with me again and this time I don't even have the magic stylus to draw people without hands. I do, however, have my beloved Paint Shop Pro 5.0 back which at least brings me comfort if it doesn't bring me magical drawing abilities.

So with the disclaimer disclaimed, I present to you this week's Friday Comic*. Oh, in addition, I should disclaim that my choice in cities was [almost] completely random. I originally was thinking Dallas, but it just didn't fit. Anyway, I hope you all get a chuckle. As for you Baltimortarians, please don't kill me. You are the only ones that will get the partial joke in the title.

FC 29 - He Who Smelt It

Last week, TreeHugger had an article about how a bunch of comics were going to cover environmentally themed issues in honor of Earth Day. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I had the idea way back. My plan was to do a whole month of comics in honor of Earth Day. Well, that kind of fell through, but I did get around to putting together at least one pseudo-environmentally themed comic*.

Anyway, as you can plainly see, art was provided by yours truly, again with the fancy stylus and touch screen*. Don't worry; now that my travels are starting to wind down, I'll have time to cajole our regular good artists into putting together some comics so you don't have to be subjected to my MSPaint pixel parties anymore. In fact, now that I've planted the seed of this whole comic thing, a couple of my artists are starting to come up with their own comic ideas as well as drawing them. Pretty soon, I'll be able to sit back and play no role whatsoever. I believe in the business, they call that "Middle Management".

FC 28 - Poor MacGyver

One glance at the comic for this week and you've prolly realized that the pencil pusher this week was yours truly. I just couldn't help myself. The computer I'm working on has this fancy touch screen with stylus so it was like I was a fancy graphics artist guy. Or maybe it was in pursuance of a dream of writing all over a computer screen. Either way, I hope you enjoy.

Thanks for all your great comic captions last week. I would say every single one of them was better than the one I was originally planning. We'll have to do another one of those soon. As for which one will be published, it is such a hard decision that I will put it off until my book deal comes through. I did LOL out loud* at the Beavis and Butthead one, though. Hehehehe.

FC 27 - Caption Contest

Trying to keep this Friday Comic Series going while on the road is proving to be somewhat difficult. But have no fear; I haven't given up on it yet. I have, however, figured out a way to save me time by having you do all the work. All along I've been outsourcing the drawing to talented people. Now I am outsourcing the writing.

The challenge is to write the best caption/speech bubble for this comic (ably drawn by Deanna). Submit your entries in the comments (or, for all those comment-phobic people, e-mail them to me (you can use the contact page if you don't have my e-mail address)). The one that makes me laugh the hardest will pasted onto the comic* for inclusion in the eventual Comics du Wren book.

Oh, and try to keep it somewhat tasteful.

FC 26 - Do It Yourself...To The Extreme

Friday comic time! I've had to deviate from my original plan re: Friday comics because of insufficient computing time due to traveling and whatnot. Hopefully, I will be able to pick up with my original plan next week. In the meantime, I invite you to enjoy this little ditty courtesy of Gabriella.

(As an interesting side note, the art for this comic was originally submitted as an alternate scene for FC 23 - Sideways but I was struck with inspiration and turned it into this doozy. Before that, though, here is how it turned out.)
